“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous…” (NRSV)
Advocate – “one who pleads for or in behalf of another; to plead in favor of; to support in public; an intercessor.” (The American College Dictionary)
Adorned by the incarnation with the ability to be fully human, yet fully God, Jesus is our advocate with the Heavenly Father.
Determined to present all of us who have come to Him through faith, even though we were sinners, Jesus intercedes for us.
Very present with us and very present with the Father, Jesus brings us into the Father’s presence, pleading for our favor.
Opposing the sin that we are, Jesus openly brings us to his Father while saying, “charge their sin to me.”
Coming between the guilt of our sin and the righteous judgment of the Father, Jesus willingly becomes our covering and advocates forgiveness for us.
Abandoning his rightful place as judge, Jesus becomes our defender; the guiltless defending the guilty.
Taking the form of humankind, Jesus shows the Father’s love for us and brings that love to us in his birth, death and resurrection – “the word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Eternal in the heavens yet choosing to come to live with us, Jesus is the only advocate we ever needed or will ever need with our loving Father in heaven.
